Quinta Santa Eufêmia & Quinta do Pôpa

We start our day with a visit to the Quinta de Santa Eufêmia, founded in 1864 and managed by the fourth generation of the family, who has been producing these excellent Port wines, maintaining the ancestral know-how of winemaking and aging. Located on the left side of the Douro River, the vineyard produces grapes of the richest varieties, in the traditional way and fermented in granite vats in order to extract their fine essences and aging in oak casks. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant. After lunch we will continue our tour with a visit to the Quinta do Pôpa, acquired in 2003 by the Ferreira Family. Located in the heart of the Douro, in the hot and dry region of Cima Corgo, this estate has a high quality soil, from which rise the vines planted on the terraced hills along the banks of Douro, with a favorable climate and noble castes. The production method reconciles the most sophisticated techniques with centuries of rigorous tradition, such as vinification by treading the grapes in granite presses at a controlled temperature.

Wine Dream Tour

As a wine-producing country, one of Portugal’s great strengths is its diversity.

Madeira is a Portuguese island, which lies several hundred miles southwest of the Portuguese coast, far into the Atlantic Ocean. Mountainous and dramatic, Madeira is a lush, fertile outcrop with a semi-tropical climate that supports a broad array of horticulture and agriculture, from banana plantations to exotic flowers.

It also grows grape vines, for the production of Madeira. Centuries ago it used to be a stop for ships headed to America. They would take on casks of the local wine- a fortified product- as ballast. When they arrived they found that the wine, which had been “cooked” during the voyage, actually became a superior beverage.

And thus Madeira became a very popular drink in the Americas. Similar to Sherry, Madeira ranges in flavour from a very dry version to very sweet.

The wine can last decades and because its popularity has waned, aged Madeiras are wonderful bargains. The island is stunningly beautiful. Most of the resorts are centered on Funchal.
